Arioso Land

Today I will share with you a special activity we do in music class that I like to call “Arioso.” The word “Arioso” refers to a type of solo vocal music appearing in an opera. However, in music class, we use this word to refer to an activity in which the children create their own songs.
The activity is simple. The children are given a prompt such as “What will you do this summer?” and they must sing about it. We like to say that we are going to “Arioso Land” where the people only understand singing.
The goals of this activity are vocal development, oral expression, melodic expression, and confidence-building. You can try this activity at home. Try simply singing about what you are doing at the moment and ask your children to join in. Many children may already sing to themselves as they play. Encourage them to create new melodies and songs as they become more comfortable.
