DIY Fossils

Posted on 04/28/20 by Amanda in Early Childhood

Fossils are so easy to make, whether you have air dry clay on hand or make your own salt dough (here's our favorite recipe).

Fossils are created when organic matters turns to rock over time, either from a preserved remain (bones), imprint, or trace of the once-living material. Here, we're discussing creating imprint fossils. You could also shape your own bones and have a fossil hunt!

If you have toy dinosaurs or bugs, you can imprint these shapes and footprints, or find objects in your yard or craft bin to imprint - shells, rocks, leaves, or pinecones. The process of creating the fossil is similar to how fossils are actually made. The clay represents the earth, whatever you imprint is the "once-living thing," and the time for the clay to dry is a fraction of the millions of years it takes for fossils to form.

Once your fossils are dry, you can decorate if you wish. It's not exactly scientifically accurate, but they do make the fossils beautiful. Add paint, glitter, or sand, whatever you wish!
